Description

The Arc of Walker County has sustained a proud history of success for more than 30 years. The foundation was incorporated in 1975 by individuals interested in the well-being and future needs of people with developmental disabilities. The Arc initially opened a small program for adults, but has expanded its programs to include Early Intervention for children from birth to age 3, Early Head Start for ages 1 to 3, and REACH Pre-Kindergarten for 4-year-olds.
The programs are housed in the Marion Bankhead Grant Center. Adult programs are located at the Russell Dairy Road facility and include Day Habilitation, Supported Employment, Semi-independent Living, and community homes.
Case management, therapy and recreation for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities are provided at both facilities.

Company description
The Early Intervention initiative is a community-based program for children from birth to 3 years of age with developmental disabilities. These services are provided free of charge to children who qualify. Most children grow and learn at about the same pace. If your child is not developing at about the same rate as most children, he or she may be experiencing a developmental delay. Areas of possible delay include how your child: sits, crawls, stands, walks; babbles, talks, gestures; feeds, dresses, drinks from a cup; plays with others, smiles, expresses feelings; thinks and solves problems. Services Offered by Early Intervention: Service Coordination, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Special Instruction, Family Trainer, Assistive Technology .
Early Intervention provides developmental evaluations and individual therapy sessions, as well as parent training. Sessions may be provided in the home, your child’s daycare, or in the mother’s day out program. Early Head Start works in conjunction with the University of Alabama at Birmingham to provide inclusive center-based childcare for one-, two-, and three-year-olds for an eleven-month period. Priority is given to families who fall below the poverty level, families at risk of abuse, mothers of a certain age, and children with developmental delays. The purpose of the Pre-K program is to prepare 4-year-olds in Walker County for kindergarten.
Children are taught the necessary building blocks to prepare them for the years ahead. Enrollment is first-come, first-served and is not financially restrictive. Out-patient services are offered at the Marian Bankhead Grant Center. Sessions can be scheduled for the convenience of the parent or caregiver. Please call the center for more information about these services.
