Company description
When Temple Beth El opened its doors in 1957, Hollywood was a small community without a synagogue and the Reform Jews had to attend services in Fort Lauderdale. Our first service was held in a meeting room of the Hollywood Beach Hotel. At that time, the congregation boasted approximately two dozen families, all of whom had a vision - a traditional Reform congregation in the heart of Hollywood. Through the generosity and dedication of several of these families, Temple Beth El became a reality.
In March 1960, Congregation President Abe Mailman wrote: "The seeds, which our congregation so laboriously planted, are beginning to bear fruit. On a ten-acre tract in the beautiful South Lake section, Temple Beth El is majestically rising out of the ground. This handsome edifice, occupying an entire city block on 14th Avenue between Wiley and Rodman Streets, is destined to become Florida's finest Reform Temple." The congregation observed their first High Holidays together in their new Sanctuary later that year in September.
Today, Temple Beth El is a progressive congregation, blending Jewish values, study, social action and traditions into a house of worship, education and community. Both young families and senior members of our congregation along with clergy and staff come together to create an earnest spirit of community and a sense of kinship. All are welcome.
